As a woman, I have suffered from menstrual cramps, and know many other women that do too. We all hear about it, and think it’s a normal part of being a woman. We think that we have to suffer through it, and the only way is by popping ibuprofen while lying in bed with a heating pad binge watching Netflix. I’ve got some news for you, you don’t have to live like this anymore! I’m here to give you some great news on how you can combat this monthly torture a natural way.
For my graduate research study at Logan College of Chiropractic, myself and 3 other colleagues performed a study about using a whole food vitamin protocol to help treat menstrual distress syndrome (MDS). MDS is classified by the following symptoms: mood disorder/depression, fatigue, insomnia, cramping, bloating, food cravings, acne, and changes in bowel habits. We used supplements from Standard Process to find out if they could help ease these symptoms. The three supplements used were Cod Liver Oil, Calcium Lactate, and Symplex F. All of the women that were participants in the study saw a significant change in their symptoms after a 60 day period.
Along with supplementation, chiropractic care can help ease the discomfort of menstrual cramps. Getting adjusted regularly helps to maintain the alignment of the pelvis, which is turn keeps the muscles and ligaments of the pelvic region balanced. Since the uterus has ligamentous attachments to the pelvis, this is very significant. The muscles of the core and pelvic floor also have muscular attachments to the spine and the pelvis.
